library fun

Here are a few wall activities I've done at the library recently that have been fun.

 

Kids had a lot of fun coloring leaves. So much fun that our teen volunteers spent most of their time the last couple months cutting leaves out and there still wasn't enough. After I took the tree down I saved my favorite leaves and laminated them for a future fall storytime activity.



Currently there's a 'Best Books of 2019' bracket up for picture books and juvenile fiction. We're down to the final four and kids have strong opinions about who should win. 

This was one of the easiest wall activities to make. I used masking tape, which is easy to put up and take down.

This next thing has been the best carpet wall activity I've come up with so far. Kids are always playing with it and parents have been raving about it. So there's absolutely no pressure to come up with the next thing. None at all : ).

It's a shopping cart matching game with days of the week. For example, find the Sunday list and the Sunday cart and put everything on your Sunday list into the Sunday cart. Velcro is how the magic happens.

vroom vroom

I had so much fun coming up with this carpet wall activity.  I found these blocks at a thrift store for $1 while looking for something else.  I laminated a bunch of construction vehicle clipart and then velcroed the crap out of everything.  I was surprised by how little velcro I actually needed.  I wasn't even expecting the blocks to hang onto the laminated pictures very well, but I was hopeful.  We changed several things on the children's side at the beginning of May and two things I was hoping would work out splendidly had to be modified.  This new interactive display, however, worked out even better than I imagined.  The kids are really enjoying it!

shelving books

One of our current activities at the library is to pretend you're a librarian and help us shelve books.

It's the stuff of dreams, folks.    

I took pictures of book spines and also found some online.  I then laminated them and added some velcro to the backs.  Easy as pie.  Making the felt bookshelf, however, was a nightmare.  Sewing took too long, all glues refused to stick, and felt glue tore the skin from my fingers.  But it was totally worth it.

But he was still hungry

Here is a fun bulletin board we had up at my branch for the last couple months.  Originally, I only put up the front and back feet.  One morning I came in and the caterpillar had like a thousand more feet.  One of my awesome coworkers spent a happy evening making caterpillar feet to surprise everyone.  

During the caterpillar's stay on our wall, kids colored all his favorite food and then picked where they wanted the food to go.  Black pie, anyone?

Dog's Colorful Day

Today I took switched out the theme for our activity space.  It is now all about The Very Hungry Caterpillar.  But before The Very Hungry Caterpillar came along, everyone helped cover the dog from Dog's Colorful Day with splats and spots.

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom

I just took down our Chicka Chicka Boom Boom display, which was a huge hit.  

I re-purposed the letters for the next bulletin board, which I'll share when it looks a bit more completed.
